Christmas Dough Ornaments

Christmas for kids is one of the most special times of the year.

As the countdown to Christmas begins children start to ask how many days before Santa Claus arrives? Children can’t wait for Christmas morning to open presents, however, the time leading up to Christmas can be just as exciting.

Children love to get involved with the spirit of Christmas no more so when it comes to decorating the tree. They enjoy painting and cooking so why not combine the two and get them into the kitchen to make some baked dough Christmas ornaments.

We still have baked dough Christmas ornaments that our children made when they were in Playgroup 3 years ago. They are so easy to make and even the youngest of children can get involved with mixing, cutting out shapes from dough and decorating the cookies.

Making Baked Dough Christmas Ornaments

The ingredients you will need are:-

  • flour,
  • salt,
  • vegetable oil,
  • water
  • and paint.

Simply mix together 2 cups of flour, 1 cup of salt and 2 tablespoons of vegetable oil. Then slowly stir in ¾ - 1 cup of water until you get clay like consistency. Older children can help their younger siblings with this job. When the mixture is completely mixed you can either mould it into different Christmas themed shapes using small hands or use Christmas cookie cutters to shape.

You could even create a Christmas Loose Moose!!

Kids - remember to wash your hands before and after you finish preparing the shapes to keep things hygienic – and to keep Mum happy!

Bake your Christmas ornaments in a 250 degree oven for approximately 1 hour.

The time will vary depending on how thick your creations are and remember not to make the Christmas designs too thick or they will crack with baking.

Once they are cooked, now it is time to paint the finished dough ornaments and add glitter and fabric to add that magical touch. Watch your kids faces light up as they hang their creations on the tree. Children can create extra decorations to send to family and friends or to leave for Rudolf and Santa.

On Christmas Eve you can snuggle up with the children, admire your handiwork on the decorated Christmas tree and read the story of Christmas, how it all began and the importance of sharing, giving and family values.
